Foreign driver's license switch
Regarding the "Gaimen Kagari" (gaimenkagari) process, which allows drivers to switch their driver's license obtained abroad to a Japanese license, the National Police Agency has decided to require address verification using a copy of a resident's card as a general rule, and to not allow short-term visitors such as tourists from overseas to switch their license. After soliciting public comments from the 11th, the agency hopes to revise the system from October of this year.
The "Gaimen Kakari" system allows people with foreign driver's licenses to obtain a Japanese driver's license if they are deemed to have the necessary knowledge and skills to drive in Japan. According to the National Police Agency, the number of foreigners who obtained Japanese licenses under this system last year reached a record high of over 68,000.
I thought this kind of policy was very good because traffic laws are different between foreign countries and Japan.

There are many differences between the transportation systems in foreign countries and Japan. Therefore, even if foreigners are able to obtain a driver's license, there is a high risk of an accident occurring.
返信削除I didn’t know much about license switching before. Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with being strict about driver’s licensing because it’s a matter of essential safety.
返信削除I'm curious to know how different traffic rules are in Japan and other countries.
返信削除I saw on the news recently that there have been many traffic accidents caused by foreign drivers. I hope that they will understand the traffic rules in Japan properly before driving.
返信削除It was a problem that was likely to increase traffic accidents by foreigners, so I felt it was good to solve it.
